In December 2006, the Human Rights Law Centre (HRLC) at the University of Nottingham signed a Co-operation Agreement with the International Criminal Court to develop a dynamic, fully-searchable database and notes of national legislation implementing the Rome Statute as well as a legal commentary, as part of the ICC Legal Tools Project.
The database will enable national legislators and other research users to conduct refined searches of over 1500 pages of legal documents and commentary, providing comparative assessment of current legislation in any combination relevant to their purposes. The national implementing legislation in the database can be searched by country or region, according to characteristics of legal systems (e.g. common law/civil law), or by using thematic categories, enabling searches based on keywords or Articles of the Rome Statute.
The database will enhance the capabilities of States to draft effective national legislation, thereby furthering the effective functioning of the Court. It will provide the legal/research community with a time-saving resource which provides comprehensive analysis of a multitude of areas pertaining to the practice of international criminal justice.
The database and notes are developed by HRLC, with expert support from the University of Nottingham’s Data and Methods Institute.
